    Description

Rhino Jazz(s) Festival 2020 From October 2 to 20 Sitting - free placementUN SPIRITUAL JAZZ TODAY Essential jazz collective in constant change, the Imperial Company is a chameleon formation whose different faces we have already known (Quartet, Pulsar, Orpheon...) over the last few years always rich in surprising creations, as was still the case at the Rhino 2017 for the tribute. With Grio (for Grand Imperial Orchestra), the four founding pillars Gérald Chevillon and Damien Sabatier at the sax, Antonin Leymarie on drums and Joachim Florent on double bass, propose a new project doubling the roster that is done byte with the arrival of accomplice friends who are also not unknown to us as the two trumpeters Fred Roudet and Aymeric Avice, the trombonist Simon Girard and the Finnish pianist Aki Rissanen. An accomplice and mischievous friendship brings together these brothers of arms and soul in this imposing and ambitious Grio whose album Music is Our Mistress was released earlier this year, a nod to Duke Ellington's autobiography, but also to the big band's idea of innovative musicians such as Ornette Coleman, Charlie Mingus and Carla Bley, singers of the lyrical and wild free jazz experiences of the 60s and 70s. It is in this libertarian crucible, without formalism or constraint, that the idea of this new proposal is based on the polyrhythms of the famous Banda Linda of Central Africa, where music has a major social function throughout life. From griots to Grio there is therefore only one step, resuming the coppery blaze of the blowers with feverish dialogues and using typical overlays and rhythmic shifts, in a twuitive cycle of repetitive cycles specific to the contemporary music of a Steve Reich. Suffice to say a spiritual jazz of today, both organic and hypnotic where, as these very inspired instrumentalists always want, the improv is always at the heart of the sound adventure. LINE UP: Damien Sabatier: Sax baritone, viola, sopranino Gérald Chevillon: Sax bass, tenor, soprano Fred Roudet: Trumpet, bugle Aymeric Avice: Trumpet, bugle Simon Girard: Trombone Aki Rissanen: Piano Joachim Florent: Double bass Antonin Leymarie: Drums In partnership with the Renaissance Theatre
